      Ageing is the accumulation of changes in mechanical and/or chemical properties of an adhesive, sealant, coating or object over time. Some products are very stable over time, but others show significant 'ageing'.

      High Initial Adhesion means the formed bonding can bear relatively much external forces, shortly after it has been applied to the substrates.

      Rheology is known as the science of studying rheological properties of materials, that is the quantitative and qualitative relationships between deformations and stresses and their derivatives.

      PVC is the abbreviation of Poly Vinyl Chloride, a thermoplastic polymer widely applied in a wide industrial range. PVC is polymerized from the monomer vinylchloride.

      Shear rate is the rate of velocity at which adjacent layers of fluid move with respect to each other, usually expressed as reciprocal seconds.

      The glass transition temperature is the temperature at which an amorphous solid, such as glass or a polymer, becomes brittle on cooling, or soft on heating. A polymer behaves like a viscoelastic material above this temperature and as an amorphous solid below. This temperature is properties which indicates a certain maximum usability temperature.

      Open time is the time after an adhesive has been applied and permitted to cure, before it becomes unworkable or loses its ability to create a bond. Also called working time. Open time varies depending on temperature, glue type, and humidity.

      Viscosity can be described as the resistance of a liquid to shear forces (and hence to flow). The higher the viscosity the more the fluidum resist to flow. For industrial utilization of adhesives, sealants and coatings flow properties are always important.

      White Spirits are clear, colourless liquid organic solvents, distilled from petroleum. they are solvents which contain a range of petroleum fractions resulting in a boilingtraject. White spirit can retain aromatics, which are expressed in volume percentage. White spirits are mainly used as thinner for paints, cleaning paint brushes and removing grease, tar adhesives and black shoe marks.

      Dekalin is ISO 9001 compliant, which means that Dekalin produces conform standard operating procedures which are examined by an extensive quality managament system. This enables Dekalin to produce products with a proven and continuous quality.

      In a bending test a layer of product is applied on a metal plate. When the product has cured the test-piece is bended conform a DIN-Normation to see if, when and how cracks form in the applied productlayer. See picture below and DIN 53152.

      A Gravel Test is carried out in order to simulate the rate of stone-chip protection a certain Dekalin coating gives to a substrate. The gravel test is carried out conform an International Standard, see SAE-J400 Method.

      Pretreatment are processes carried out to reduce, eliminate, or alter the nature of a substrate before an adhesives, coating or sealant is layered on top. In the adhesion, coating or sealant business there are more pretreatment-methods available, dependant on costs, substrate or application a selection is made. In all cases the pretreatment-process enhances the final quality of adhesion/binding of the product to the substrate.

      The DIN50021 Standard is an International acknowledged standard for a salt spray test. It describes the frame-boundaries of the salt-spray-test-method to determine the resistance to oxidation. Test pieces with a normalized product layer are exposed to 99% humidity with high salt concentrations. See also Salt Spray test.

    • Where does the DIN 53152 Standard stands for?

      The DIN53152 Standard is an international standard, which describes the performance for a bending test, which is a quality-measure for some Dekalin Produkts. It can easily be said to be a normalized temperature depending bending test. See also Bending Test.

    • What are Butylstrips?

      Butylstrips are made out of kneadable butylkit in tape form. These sealing strips are used to foil and seal  irregular openings or cracks. Available in different geometries and dimensions, like circular, rectengular etc.

    • What are Contact Adhesives?

      Contact Adhesives are a group of adhesives which have to be applied to both surfaces which are to be adhered. First the surfaces dry for some time before pushed together. Once pushed together, the bonding is established. Natural rubber and polychloroprene (Neoprene) are commonly used in contact adhesives.

    • What are Drying Adhesives?

      Drying Adhesives are made out of a blend of ingredients, typically polymers, dissolved in a, mostly oragnic, solvent. As the solvent evaporates, the adhesive consolidates. Depending on the chemical composition of the adhesive, they will adhere to different materials to greater or lesser degrees. Some Dekalin Products are drying adhesives.

    • What are Hot Melt Adhesives?

      Hot melt adhesives are thermoplastic adhesives. Applied hot, above their glass transition temperature (Tg) and cure when they cool down. Some hot melts are reversible.

    • What are MS Polymers?

      MS Polymers is a general term used to describe the group Silyl Modified Polymers. This group of polymers has silyl terminated polyether groups which cure together with water. The curing proces of a MS Polymer is also called the hydrolysis of the silyl-group to form covalent bonds. MS Polymers are available in different compositions which determine the final properties of the cured MS Polymer. Varying substituents, which form the polymer backbone, determine the final properties.

    • What are Natural Adhesives?

      Natural adhesives are adhesives made out of natural components, like proteins or animal waste (e.g. bones). These natural adhesives have a history that goed back to the early Chinese, Egyptian, Roman and Greek cultures.

    • What are Synthetic Adhesives?

      Synthetic adhesives are adhesives made out of synthetic/chemical substances. Elastomers, thermoplastic, and thermosetting adhesives are examples of synthetic adhesives. Nowadays all complex adhesives are synthesized. Some are still on a natural basis and thus called natural adhesives.

      Poly Urethane is commonly abbreviated as PU. PU is any polymer consisting of a chain of organic units joined by urethane links. Polyurethane polymers are formed by reacting a monomer containing at least two isocyanate functional groups with another monomer containing at least two alcohol groups in the presence of a catalyst. Different building blocks influence the final physical and chemical properties of the synthesized Poly Urethane.

      A Primer is a layer which is applied to a surface to improve adhesion of a topcoat and/or improve corrosion resistance.

      A sealant is a viscous material that changes state to become solid, once applied, it is a compressible plastic material sealing any opening or junction of two parts, to prevent the penetration of air, gas, noise, dust, fire, smoke or liquid. Commonly made of silicone, butyl tape, or polysulfide. When cured it has flexible adhesive properties

    • What is a Seam Sealer?

      A Seam Sealer is a putty-like product used to seal seams or gaps in a body. Available in solvent-based formulations, as well as water based.

      In general can be stated that adhesives are compounds in a liquid or semi-liquid state that adhere or bond items of equal or different nature together. Adhesives are either natural or synthetic based, which depends on the nature of the components.
